leaving for canada tomorrow.
nfl draft wasn't without
drama. randy moss got traded, quinn fell to 22, and there were plenty of
surprises in between. the draft is great because every team has hope on
that day. for those two days you feel as though your team has a good chance
for next year.
poison oak has mostly subsided.
i'll try staying away from that crap from now on.
won't update page for a
few weeks, but there should be plenty once i do.
where i'll be.
worked on getting some
old disney stock in my name. my grandmother gave my sister and me two shares
of disney a long time ago. eventually that turned into 24 shares, but because
my dad didn't do anything with it, it somehow became "unclaimed property."
now i have to go through a bunch of steps to get it in my name. this has
been a 6+ month process so far. tomorrow i'll get the last of the paperwork
notarized and then things should be done on my end.
ran errands today.
i wonder how often "independently
wealthy" people are actually independently wealthy. more often than not
i would guess they're wealthy in large part because of some inheritance.
i don't have a problem with inheritance, but i do have a problem with the
term "independently wealthy" simply being used to describe someone who
doesn't have to work because they have money.
going out tonight with
meryl. not sure what we're going to do.
spent the last four days
at the sanders ranch. tuesday was really rough - worked on freeing the
stumps of several juniper bushes. overall that project took us about three
days. luke, gabe and gabe's uncle all worked on it at different times.
today we worked on a neighbor's fence. she wanted a lattice fence topper
to be added to her existing fence because of her neighbor's annoying dogs.
it only took us a couple hours, but we didn't finish the entire thing because
the lumber yard was out of the lattice toppers. i also got to see the rest
of the property today. we took a hike down to the creek and took the steep
way back, blazing our own trail. five acres is a lot of land.
the next few days will
be dedicated to gearing up towards my trip to canada.
planning on going to the
sanders ranch today.
two year anniversary with
meryl on thursday.
leaving for canada on monday.
this weekend we went to
meryl's parents' place. they've gotten into beekeeping so we got to see
them load their first two batches of bees. honey should be ready in six
months, if memory serves. pretty neat. we saw fracture and went out to
eat. i watched some of the nba playoff games as well. the warriors winning
was a welcome surprise. i don't think they'll win the series, but it's
nice to see dallas hurt a little.
poison oak didn't keep
me up too much last night. that's a good thing. i think it's on the down
swing by now. hopefully it's completely gone by the time i go to canada.
columbine anniversary today.
4.20 is bad for a few different reasons.
finished painting the first
part of my aunt's place. still several rooms that could be painted.
the feedback form on the
millersmovies page has gotten a couple hits. had some guy from india write
to me asking about a liam neeson movie. also had a friend of a guy i met
at cuyahoga email me his praise.
been playing a lot of super
mario bros lately.
started watching a movie
today called confetti and thought it was crap. the movie-less streak continues.
last day of painting at
aunt's is tomorrow. having dinner there afterwards.
next week i'm going back
to santa cruz to work on the sanders ranch, should be fun.
got the car back today.
it was a hundred less than expected for the front struts because they didn't
need to replace the tower bushings. still need to get the rear struts done.
good thing i got my tax return yesterday.
been busy lately.
meryl's car needs struts
and a new radiator. yay. my car gets front struts tomorrow and i'll hold
off on the rear struts until i get back from canada.
been at my aunt's all week
working on painting her place.
johnny and ryan came over
yesterday and we ate at barney's. i thought the burgers were good, but
not as good as those at fenton's. played some super mario kart on snes.
haven't seen a movie in
a while, should fix that tomorrow.
poison oak still has a
hold of me. it sucks.
this whole virginia tech
shooting is obviously unfortunate. a lot of the fallout is pretty pathetic.
people use it as a reason to jump on the anti-gun lobby or talk about depression,
etc. there are a lot of factors that lead to a thing like this, but most
people seem to want to reduce it to a single factor. it also made me think
about depression and thoughts of suicide. i've heard a lot of people talk
about the fact that cho had suicidal thoughts, etc. personally, i think
someone who hasn't had suicidal thoughts is less healthy than someone who
has. if you haven't thought about your own value in the world and whether
or not your life is worth living, then i think something's wrong. i heard
one caller on npr suggest that colleges screen potential students for mental
illness and depression and require treatment before they could attend.
this is the kind of overreaction that annoys the hell out of me. i know
it's crass and tasteless, but i'd rather endure a few school shootings
every couple years than have this kind of intrusion on tens of thousands
of depressed high school seniors.
heard about a holocaust
survivor who was one of the victims of the shooting. it's pretty sad that
a guy survives the nazis, but falls victim to some overachieving asian
kid who read too much sylvia plath.
too soon? sorry.
working in santa cruz has
been pretty good so far. we've gotten a lot done on the ranch. we've taken
out countless shrubs and plants, trimmed trees, removed brick, cleaned
the garage, and taken a few trips to the dump and salvation army. still
plenty of work to be done.
also need to help my aunt
paint some of her house.
going to try to get both
our cars into the shop in the next week or two.
in a little over two weeks
i'll be on the road towards canada with johnny and vern. i'll live on a
glacier and help johnny with his research for a couple weeks, then i'll
come back down and resume the job search. the next few weeks should be
haven't been watching many
movies lately. for the first two months of the year i was on pace to see
over 600 movies this year, but that's not going to happen. now i'm on pace
for about 400.
meryl's at the a's/white
sox game with her dad tonight. i should have gone to a movie tonight since
there are so many i want to see, but i didn't think about it, so i've missed
car didn't start correctly
today. took three tries before it started without dying. hope to take care
of that and the struts within the next week or two.
been fairly busy lately.
hope to accomplish a lot today.
been getting phone calls
from some fax at 5am and 11pm. very annoying.
last tuesday jon came over
and we hung out.
went to the sanders ranch
last week to help with landscaping and demolition of various kinds. we
also fixed a leaking pipe. overall it was a good and productive time. i
have several bruises and abrasions all over my body. i even have a couple
little spots where poison oak got me. fun times. going back tomorrow for
a few more days.
also going with johnny
to canada next month. vern and i will tag along to help him with his glacier
research. it'll be fun working and living on a glacier for a few weeks.
it's good having friends
around again. first time in years that i've had more than one friend within
a few miles of home.
yesterday meryl and i went
to a few family gatherings. first we had brunch with my sister and aunt's
family. then we went to her grandmother's place and then to her grandfather's.
long day of family stuff.
called a couple places
to see how much it would cost to get the struts on my camry replaced. the
consensus seemed to be at least $1500. i can't seem to get a break when
it comes to cars lately. it drags when i go over large speed bumps, so
i really do need to get it taken care of.
went to the a's game on
friday and sunday. friday's game was pathetic because it ended in a tie.
it was also strange because it was at sf, but they were using a dh. yesterday's
game was better because the a's won. johnny and luke came too.
saturday's ucla game was
sad. clearly the refs screwed ucla, but that wasn't the entire reason for
their loss. brewer's length bothered afflalo and ucla's defense didn't
lead to any offense. florida is the best team in the country and it's pretty
clear. osu needs 15+ rebounds from oden and 55%+ shooting from the team
in order to beat them. if those things don't happen then it's going to
be a repeat performance for florida. florida killing osu in a national
championship? sounds pretty familiar. i'll be rooting for osu, but i don't
think they'll win.
going to johnny and luke's
ranch this week to help out with some manual labor. that'll be fun.
allergies are killing
me. there's some kind of tree that is here and in davis that gives me allergies.
