  • still recovering from surgery. vicadin is good.
  • my fantasy teams are doing very poorly. i'll end up in last place in baseball and probably lose this week in football. i just don't know how to predict who on my team will do well. a lot of the time i'll have the right players and choose the wrong ones.
  • i plan on going to work tomorrow even though my face is still swollen.
  • the boss said that he's going to start taking interviews for the assistant manager position. we'll see about that.
  • minnesota has a shitty defense.
  • barbed wire tattoos are retarded.
  • minnesota needs dennis green back. minnesota is playing like a high school team right now and their defensive coordinator needs to be fired. i feel only kinda bad for the vikings right now.
  • i was extremely happy to see the rams lose today.

  • "SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Terrell Owens doesn't care if the San Francisco 49ers were injured and ailing. He still believes they didn't beat the Washington Redskins badly enough. ``I'm not going to bite my tongue,'' Owens said Tuesday as the 49ers packed up for several days off during their bye week. ``Like I said, we need to develop killer instinct, for whatever reason. That's it. I said what I had to say. I'm not going to backtrack on what I said. I said what I said Sunday, and that's what I meant.'' Owens stirred his first controversy of the season following San Francisco's easy 20-10 victory over Washington. Owens was angry coach Steve Mariucci ordered the team to kneel on the ball for the final two plays of an eight-minute drive, running out the clock at the Redskins 16."
  • there are five reasons owens is totally right here. 1. the redskins showed no mercy in the preseason - so it's time for revenge. 2. to be a champion you have to be able to have a killer instinct, there's no two ways about it. 3. points can come into play when determining whether you will go into the playoffs or not. i think offensive points are third or fourth on the criteria list when two teams are tied in the playoff standings, but it's still reason enough to go for the points. 4. the 49ers have a shitty offense and the last few minutes of the game might be a good time to gain a little confidence going into next week. 5. i own g. hearst. and t. owens on my fantasy football team so any yards/touchdowns they get help me so racking up points would have likely helped my team.

  • updated movies list. watched koyaanisqatsi and mo better blues.
  • today wasn't a very good day.
  • this week in fantasy football wasn't that great either. i should beat ryan, but that's because he doesn't even seem to care considering he only bothered starting one quarterback.
  • i think "man with a movie camera" says a lot more with each shot than koyaanisqatsidoes, but i think that's fitting since the latter seems to be more about an overall picture and experience and the former has more of an agenda.
  • i think it kinda smells in the apartment right now.
  • i don't like it when it gets darker earlier. i've never liked fall - it usually brings about a seasonal cold, rain, and earlier darkness. none of those things are particularily attractive to me.
  • i'm not sure i entirely understand the reason people slam their doors. if you've lived in a place long enough you know how much force to apply when closing your door.
  • the internet doesn't have anything that interests me anymore.
  • the newest vincent gallo album is quite nice.
  • learned where the term "limelight" comes from today. learning is cooler when it doesn't require very much effort.
  • we've really screwed up the everglades. i'd like to visit them sometime and learn more about that area was so jacked up by human intervention.

  • ken burns is on cspan right now talking about his new documentary - "the civil war."
  • i ordered south park season one and the special edition of lord of the rings last week.
  • washed my car and found that somebody with a car bumped the side of it. my month just gets better everyday. the only that hasn't happened yet is having my car break down...that's one reason i don't drive it because knowing my luck lately it would end up costing me money just like my computer and my wisdom teeth and everything else.
  • someone told me that "prince can play 23 instruments well." that's impressive, but i don't care if he can play a harp with his balls, his music is lame and all his songs are about having sex or how great he is. screw prince.
  • i started adding release dates to my cd list. i do the most productive things with my time.
  • my fantasy baseball team has been stinking it up lately.
  • aaron mcgruder (creator of the "boondocks" comic strip) is on cspan now, pretty cool.
  • boondocks

the onion stat shot. i like 5 and 9 the most
    9-21-02 (12:26)
  • usually when i wake up before noon it's a good thing. when i get out of the house before 1 it's also good. i don't have any reason to leave the house today though. i did my shopping yesterday. i don't have any money to do any more shopping. i don't feel like playing frisbee with myself. i might wash my car later on.
  • the new "add n to (x)" album is good, comes out in october i think. boards of canada are going to rerelease their first album sometime in november. "audioslave" the band formerly known as "civilian" (rage against the machine with chris cornell) has set november 25th as the date for their new album. and according to the sony representative i talked with it's not going to be the same material that's been online this whole time. we'll see. there hasn't been any really good rock releases this year, in my opinion. so lately i've been listening to a lot of idm. the new underworld didn't grab me at all.
  • melanie is going to be back in davis on monday.

  • work has been a drag lately because the new boss always bitches about money and that makes the place feel all the more corporate.

  • 9-19-02 (14:53)

  • saw lou piniella go crazy again today. he's a funny guy...he through third base into the outfield. seriously though, he's out of control and should probably be gang tackled when he does this crap.
  • saw leslie (of the infamous sorority life) today. so far that's been the highlight of my day.
  • i think everyone agrees that joe morgan is a superior baseball analyst.

  • 9-18-02 (21:45)

  • watched the angels/a's game tonight. both teams have demonstrated that they can win with pitching and with hitting. right now they look like the best teams in the AL. then again i don't watch all that many games.
  • it would be nice to be closer to johnny and luke.
  • i need to cut overhead or start bringing in more cash, things are tight.
  • had a good day at work today.
  • picked up koyaanisqatsi and powaqqatsi on dvd yesterday. the soundtrack for the next film (naqoyqatsi) comes out soon and i should be able to get that for free.
  • basketball player george lynch looks like steve wilbur, or vise versa.
  • john bush, of allmusic.com, is freaking cool.
  • updated moviesiown list.
  • updated cdlist.
  • saw a girl with an interesting shirt today. it was a picture of curious george (the cartoon monkey who is always getting in trouble for doing dumb things) standing in front of a flagpole (bearing an american flag) with his right hand over his heart. i asked the girl where she got the shirt and she replied "target." given the source and the person wearing it i highly doubt it was intended to be a bit of social commentary, but to me there is no more fitting image for the times than that one. a monkey looking up at a flag with his hand over his heart.
  • watched an episode of the anna nicole smith show. i think i hate her more than any other character in history.
  • if someone can explain why college athletes can't receive gifts from sponsors i'd love to hear it. i've never understood why they wouldn't be able to make money using their talent while in college. i'm really interested in hearing what the explanation is.

  • pardon the interruption is a great sports show.

  • 9-16-02 (20:34)

  • john madden is funny.
  • listened to autechre pretty much all day yesterday.
  • work went pretty quickly today. i still do the same work that an assistant manager would do, but without the pay raise. not sure if i should just stop doing all that work  and work at the level i get paid or if i should somehow corner the boss into paying me more. oh well, guess i'll just wait it out for a while.
  • have a test in class tomorrow. i never bought the book so i don't think i'm going to enjoy class tomorrow.
  • the redskins offense has had a hard day.

  • 9-15-02 (14:31)

  • heard about a study on npr the other day which was conducted by a dancer/scientist who studied the brain's response to seeing other people do things on video. for example she hooked up her assistant, who is not a dancer, to a machine which measured her brain waves while watching people dancing. what she found out is that no matter what activity she showed on the screen the person watching the activity used the same part of their brain while watching a certain activity that they would if they were performing that activity. when the dancer/researcher hooked up her brain to the machine she found a stronger response to something like dancing because it was more familiar, but it was still the same part of the brain being stimulated. this study would explain why people excited when watching sports, porn, or any other activity. when we watch someone doing something our brain actually thinks, to a lesser extent, that we are performing that activity ourselves. the scientist said that she thinks this is one way we learn - we see someone shooting a basketball and our brain actually goes through the mental motions in order to emulate that physical motion. to me it explains why i want to play basketball after seeing a basketball game or feel tired after watching a track race ...npr has some good stuff.
  • my fantasy football team isn't doing very well today.
  • updated movies list.
  • it's good to see the rams sucking again, makes the universe move back into its proper alignment.

  • rearranged my room last night, it looks a lot better and has more open space than before.
  • gave myself a haircut, did my laundry, and ate two pb and j sandwiches.
  • i've seen some awful commercials lately. there's a coors commercial that glorifies conspicuous consumption and a truck commercial that uses a song about a woman finding self-respect and getting out of a dead end relationship to sell trucks - not sure how that is supposed to work.
  • lou piniella, the mariners coach, is funny when he argues with refs. i saw one of his more infamous arguments where he was yelling at the umpire and after a while of kicking dirt at him ended up getting on his hands and knees and scooping dirt over home plate with his arms. it was hilarious, but ineffective.
  • woody allen is a funny guy. larry david reminds me of woody allen.
  • i'm going to get my wisdom teeth pulled on the 27th.
  • fsu seems to have a pretty good football team.
  • i'm in first place after the first week of fantasy football which means there's no chance i'll finish in first - it's pretty much impossible to lead wire to wire.
  • i don't have any plans for the rest of my weekend. i might watch 'one hour photo' today.

  • 9-12-02 (15:24)

  • espn posed a good question today and i'm wondering what other people think. email me your answers to the following question: "who most revolutionized their sport?" their top ten included: woods, ruth, robinson, gretzky, ali, palmer, unitas, jordan, bird/magic, and someone else who i didn't see hear.

  • 9-11-02 (18:54)

  • watching the yankees game right now. chris berman and joe morgan are the announcers. berman is talking about abraham lincoln and the declaration of independence and other items in american history. since berman was a history major in college i think he can get away with it. he's a smart guy. speaking of unattractive, chubby, smart white guys...norm abram (of this old house and the new yankee workshop) is rad.
  • i haven't discovered any interesting sites on the internet in months.

  • 9-10-02 (21:35)

  • got the scoop on gold medal basketball game of 1972. after collins made the free throws the us was up 50-49. by international rules only a coach may call a timeout and apparently a timeout was called, but there was a malfunction that didn't signal this to the referees. so they imbounded the ball ran the ball to half court and with one second left a timeout was called. at this point some olympic big wig who didn't have any authority over the actual game told the refs to allow the russians to imbound the ball again and to put 2 seconds back on the clock. so for the second time the ref let the russians imbound the ball from one end of the court. there was a long imbound throw and after three seconds there wasn't a score by the russians so the americans started celebrating their victory. the refs called the players back to the floor and made them do the whole thing over because the second time there was apparently 50 seconds placed on the clock instead of 3. so on this third try the clock was properly set and the russians were allowed to imbound the ball again. this time they were able to score and win 51-50. one side says it was unfortunate that there was confusion, but the russians beat the americans fairly and that the americans should stop pouting. the americans say that they were cheated twice and the whole thing was a sham. i say that the refs were completely incompetent and should have been shot by an irate american fan. additionally the americans truly were screwed twice - once when someone without proper authority put time back on the clock and once when the russians were allowed to imbound the ball because of a clock error. had the russians scored during that second chance when the clock was incorrectly set they would have won, so they essentially were given a freebie. if it would have counted for them then it should also count against them when they used that time the second time around. pretty shitty situation on the whole.
  • science times is a really cool show.
  • the worst news of the day wasn't that i'm going to be broke for the rest of my life, rather it was hearing that webber is going to have legal trouble beyond what i originally thought.

  • today was pretty lame on the whole.
  • melanie left for l.a. today.
  • i'm pretty much sick of hearing all this stuff about 9-11. it was a pretty bad day, on the whole we haven't really learned from it, on the whole i'm glad it happened and if it should happen again and i die in the process i'll be pretty satisfied with myself, because maybe i will be part of something that creates some lasting positive action rather than reactionary politicking.
  • if you care enough you'll call your senator and representative.

  • 9-10-02 (13:40)

  • just came back from the dentist...no one ever leaves a dentist office happy. why don't dentists work nights or weekends? why do you have to be rich to afford medical care? i've had to take a 3 hour lunch to go to the dentist, fill out paperwork, wait in his office be told that i'm going to have to fork over 732 bucks, and eat lunch. all that makes for a great day.
  • have to get back to work. after that i have a test to take in my worthless poli sci class.
  • i might try to get a job working at the theater again...i know the boss and working for her isn't all bad, the perks are nice, and the schedule fits mine. working seven days a week wasn't horrible while i was doing it last year and now it's necessary so i have more motivation.
  • in other news, i won this week's fantasy football matchup with the most points of any of the eight players so that's pretty sweet.

  • fantasy sports have been more interesting lately.
  • listening to autechre's LP5 while flipping between basketball and football. i think this is what sundays are about.
  • "Autechre creates a fascinating sonic world on their fifth album release, where electronic pulses and blips are used to create fantastic textural waves. Members Sean Booth and Rob Brown prove they've become masters of programming throughout, issuing a more than suitable follow-up to their critically praised 1995 release, Tri Repetae++ (1997's Chiastic Slide wasn't considered a true follow-up by the band). Although it may be hard to take for those uninitiated into Autechre's unique style (it's hard to detect melodies upon first listen), you'll discover something new with each repeated listen. Since all the songs are cut from the same sonic cloth, the album is best when listened to in its entirety, but the tracks "Acroyear2," "Rae," and "Fold4, Wrap5" are definite highlights. Although not for everyone, LP5 should be admired, since it's not comparable to anything past or present. Uncompromisingly cutting-edge"

  • colin powell (read bush administration environmental policy) was booed in Johannesburg; yay. i heard one report that said the booing was "incessant" and npr said it was "sparse." i trust both news sources as much as any news source...this is a classic example of why the media has alienated me...i don't feel like i can really trust anything i hear from any news source. one report makes it seem like a major rebellion and the other makes it seem like a small group booed only a couple times in 5 minutes. other news sources haven't even mentioned the existence of the summit in africa. lame. people claim npr is so great, but i honestly don't see it. they're about 1000 times better than any other news source their size or bigger, but there are lots of cases where their reporting is weak, corny, elitist, decidedly slanted or otherwise flawed. i guess it's the worst news source, except for all the others and that's why listen to it every monday-friday.
  • "Allan Fitzsimmons, the man chosen by the Bush administration to head its wildfire prevention program, does not believe in ecosystems and says the extinction of threatened and endangered species would not be a crisis. Fitzsimmons was tasked last week with reducing fire danger on Interior Department lands through the newly formed Healthy Forests Initiative, but environmentalists say the appointment confirms their fears that the initiative is just a smokescreen for expanding logging on public lands.  President Bush wants logging companies to thin forests, theoretically to reduce fire danger, in exchange for the right to harvest commercially valuable trees.  Under the White House plan, forest protections would be suspended and it would be harder for environmentalists to sue to block thinning.  Fitzsimmons, a free-market policy analyst aligned with libertarian and conservative think tanks, has written papers calling ecosystems human constructs and criticizing those who try to accommodate nonexistent ecosystem needs.""
  • "Native Americans are pushing for laws that would give them veto power over development projects on historically sacred sites.  Despite fierce opposition to granting Native Americans such power, especially on non-reservation land, the legal push has made some headway:  A bill is nearing passage in California, support is growing for similar legislation in Congress, and the U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld a lower court ruling prohibiting logging on a sacred site of the Hoopa tribe in Northern California -- even though the land is privately owned by a non-native person.  The trend has been spurred on by fears among Native Americans that the Bush administration's emphasis on maximizing domestic energy sources could lead to drilling and digging on sacred lands.  Among the threatened lands they hope to protect: the Zuni Salt Lake in New Mexico and sacred trails on what was once Quechan tribal land in Indian Pass, Calif."

  • i'm for most anything which a) gives power to native americans b) has the potential to protect open land.
